SGIDT is located at Jagdeo Path, Patna, which is well connected by air, railways and roadways. The campus is just 2 km away from Jai Praksah Narayan International Airport, Patna; 8 km  away from Patna and Danapur railway stations, and 10 km away from the Mithapur Bus Stand. The campus has a shrine academic environment. Teaching is imparted in he air-conditioned classrooms with the help of multimedia projectors. Administrative and academic blocks have round the clock wi-fi access. Students also access internet and computer facilities in the computer lab of the institute. The campus is fully residential. Separate hostels for boys and girls are available. Hostels are safe and equipped with all basic amenities to ensure comfortable and cosy stay of the students.

The institute is ICAR accredited and offers courses as per the recommendations of Vth Dean’s Committee of ICAR. It has fine-tuned and upgraded its academic programmes from time to time to keep pace with the technological advancements in the dairy industry. The institute has experienced and qualified faculty who are involved in guiding training, placements and extra-curricular development of the students Both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Dairy Technology are available for the aspirants who want to pursue their carrier in dairy sector. For admission in B. Tech. (DT) programme, 10+2 passed students from PCM or PCMB stream are eligible. The number of seats for admission in B. Tech. (DT) programme is twenty five whereas two seats are available in M. Tech. (DT) programme. Admissions are based on the performance of the students in competitive examinations conducted at national, state and university level. The institute gets budgetary allocation from the university, which is funded by the Govt. of Bihar and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. All students who are enrolled in the B. Tech. (DT) programme get stipend worth thirty thousand per annum for four years.


  • Train personnel in dairy technology and dairy husbandry in order to handle dairy development programmes in the state of Bihar.
  • Provide short term training to dairy farmers, dairy entrepreneurs and dairy technicians as and when required.
  • Conduct under graduate and post graduate programme in the selected areas of dairy science as per requirement of the state.
  • Carry out research in collaboration with related disciplines on various aspects of Dairy science and technology.
  • Disseminate the scientific knowledge in relation to milk and milk products through extension education programmes

Activities and linkages

 Since inception, the institute has provided high dividends in terms of excellent academic and research outputs. The institute has been producing B. Tech. (DT) graduates with spectacular placement records. Many of the students are persistently securing Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and have qualified competitive examinations to seeking admissions in National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal and other Agricultural Universities (SAUs) in India. A number of students have qualified CAT, GATE, and are studying in IIMs, IRMA, etc. Alumni of SGIDT are serving in many of the prestigious dairy plants like AMUL, COMFED, Mother Dairy, Nestle, etc, Besides, its alumni are serving in various Government organizations, State Agricultural Universities, Line-departments of the Government, banks, etc.

Apart from teaching, scientists are involved in various research and extension activities. SGIDT is one of the collaborating centres in ICAR-ILRI research project entitled ‘Development of Goat milk and meat value chain in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh’. The goal of the project is to sustainably improve the socio-economic condition of goat rearers, traders, butchers and other key actors involved in goat meat/milk value chain in selected districts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.  Central Institute for Goat Research (CIRG), Mathura and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Nairobi are the lead centres.

Institute has adopted a village ‘Parsa Ibrahimpur’ in Patna district and provides regular advisory to the dairy producers on various aspects of dairying and value addition. The institute also organizes demonstrations on preparation of dairy products like Rasgulla, Gulab Jamun, Paneer and Peda with the help of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in the nearby districts. The scientists of the institute frequently participate in Kisan Goshthi, Farmers Choupals, Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (MGMG) programmes
